Most groups at SLU see the finance process as something that limits their growth, Amanda wants to change that by giving more autonomy to groups in the allocation process, streamlining finance processes, and using ALL funds more efficiently. Amanda also believes that diversity and inclusion is the job of everyone not just the VP of Diversity and Inclusion, so she wants to change the traditional role of the VP of Finance to be more outreach-based.
Autonomy in allocation: When organizations go through the finance process, the committee's first job is to determine whether things are fundable or unfundable. Next, they determine which things are fundable, but cannot be funded due to lack of money. This second step is a process that isn't formalized, which gives the committee a ton of power over what events groups hold. As the VP of Finance, Amanda would set up a process so that clubs can prioritize their budget. Additionally, Amanda would do these cuts at the end of the process, so that cuts can be made equally (by percent) amongst groups.
Streamlining processes: The current VP of Finance is doing a great job with this already, so Amanda would just like to continue her work. The directives have already been shortened, so Amanda would like to put them into more readable formats, such as videos or infographics. Additionally, Amanda would like to revamp the workshop process into a more collaborative experience, so that organizations can maximize their personal budgets. Behind the scenes, Amanda would like to "clean" the data that the committee uses, so that it can be analyzed better.
Using all funds: The VP of Finance is in charge of the Finance and Wellness Committee. The Wellness Committee allocates money apart from the finance process. In the past it has funded things like Java with the Jesuits, bike stations, and massages during finals. Each year the Wellness fund is not fully used, and Amanda would like to change that improving outreach. Additionally, there is a technology fund that is not run by the VP of Finance, but Amanda would like to stay involved with that committee to ensure that students are seeing the benefits of their fees every semester. Amanda believes that these funds are great ways for students to collaborate, and purchase large shared items.
Economic justice: There is a need to fight for economic justice here at SLU, and in St. Louis. At SLU, financial barriers play a large role in retention of students of color; additionally, unpaid internships are awesome, but greatly disadvantage low-income students. Amanda would like to research scholarships at SLU, and push for more inclusive opportunities and programs for all students. In St. Louis, marginalized communities suffer greatly from being denied fair access to credit. Amanda would like to explore potential ways for students to get involved.
Outreach: Amanda would like to set up easy ways to contact, and meet with someone from the Finance Committee. This year's VP of Finance has already started great work on revamping the Funding Buddy process, and Amanda would like to continue that, so that all organizations can have an accessible resource. Additionally, Amanda will be utilizing social media to stay accountable for her goals.
The finance process should be something that helps groups grow. Amanda believes that by making processes better, she can do this.
